The Marshall Collections
Six collections of music by William Marshall (1748 - 1833)
6 Collections of the music of William Marshall
(1748 - 1833) of Fochabers in Morayshire, one of Scotland's greatest
fiddler-composers. These include the 2-volume Collection of Strathspey Reels etc
of 1781-1793, Marshall's Scottish Airs, Melodies etc. of 1822 and the 1845
posthumous collection, with other smaller publications. Of the 317 tunes, at
least 37 are repeated, often with different titles and changes in the music, but
in the interests of historical accuracy we have printed each Collection in its
entirety, along with a table showing the repetitions.
The tunes represent just one facet of the talents of this remarkable man -
athlete, dancer, astronomer, clockmaker, surveyor etc - described by Robert
Burns as the first (ie finest) composer of strathspeys of the age.
The book contains a foreword by James Alexander, Director of the Fochabers
Fiddlers, and an introduction by Charles Gore. The Memoir published with the
posthumous collection is reproduced. The music has been faithfully reprinted in
clear type with the minimum of editing.
Size A4, printed on glossy paper and contains 317 tunes.

Highland Collections
The music of seven 18th and 19th century fiddler-composers from the

spanning a century, shows a variety of style, both in the original compositions
and in the other dance tunes of the times. The composers are William Christie,
Isaac Cooper, Angus Cumming, Charles Grant, Donald Grant, James Henry and
William Morrison.
Size A4, printed on glossy paper and contains over 560 tunes.

error). The Highland Music Trust is to be commended for this publication, along
with the Glen Collection (2001) and the Athole Collection (1996)
Size A4, printed on glossy paper and contains 357 tunes.

compiled and edited by Richard Carlin
This volume contains almost 600 strathspeys, jigs and reels. It has been
compiled from the original collections published between 1784 and 1822 by Niel
and Nathaniel Gow, the father and son violinist/composers.
Niel Gow revolutionized Scottish music by inventing a new style of bowing,
known as the 'up-driven' technique, that accentuated the unique strathspey
rhythm.
Besides the invaluable contribution of the Gows, other important Scottish
composers such as William Marshall and Donald Dow are featured, as well as some
of the more important tunes in the traditional Scottish repertoire.
This collection also features detailed notes on the life and times of Niel and
Nathaniel Gow, an analysis of the 'up-driven' bow technique, the origination
of the strathspey as well as a detailed discography and bibliography.
Very few tunes are duplicated in the Gow's Repository listed below.
