Whistles
Bernard Overton R.I.P. 1930 - 2008 Unfortunately we have to let you know of the sad news that Bernard Overton passed away on the 14th of June. It was quite unexpected and a shock for many. It happened last Saturday when he was on a weekend break with his wife Margaret. She has been trying to contact family first before making it public. Many of you knew Bernard personally. Together with the help of Finbar Furey he introduced for the first time in traditional music, lower keyed whistles, most notably the Low D. It is 40 years this year since he made his first whistle and he never stopped making even up to the last days. Before he started making whistles there were no bands playing the lower keyed whistles and when you look around today there are so many musicians/bands in the world that use these instruments. It is quite unbelievable really and also how many instrument makers have started making these instruments since then. What was started back then, certainly has made a big effect on the sound of the music we hear today. Chances are high that one of your favorite bands uses Low whistles. He will be missed a lot. The funeral will take place on the 30th of June in Coventry, UK. Our thoughts are with Margaret, Dawn and David. Sent to us by Colin and Brigitte Goldie, our current Overton Whistle maker. Mike and Beth are deeply saddened by the loss of this vibrant and enthusiastic man.
Tony Dixon Flutes and Whistles
3 Piece Flute by Tony Dixon A three piece flute made from ABS plastic with cork sealed joins and metal rings. They are very easy to play, loud, in tune and sound great. They are ideal for sessions when taking your expensive wooden flute can be too risky. They are also easy to care for and are always ready to play. They come with a strong nylon case with a velcro catch. 1 Piece Flute by Tony Dixon This flute is made out of ABS plastic.
Two piece Duo Flutes/Low D Whistles by Tony Dixon The Duo Flute/Whistle is a Low D instrument with interchangeable flute and whistle heads
Two piece Duo Piccolo/High D Whistles by Tony Dixon This Duo is a high whistle that can be changed into a D piccolo or fife. It has a plastic mouth piece with an aluminium body. The interchangeable mouthpieces have a nice metal slide that enables some tuning.
David O'Brien Whistles David O'Brien has been handcrafting pennywhistles from nickel plated copper since 1996. Each has a separate head joint that makes them tuneable. You have the choice of a metal fipple or the newer delrin fipple that makes the tone reedier with a higher back pressure.
The O'Brien Rover is a three piece whistle that comes with a tweed woollen carrying case. It is available in the key of D, with a metal fipple. Each of the three pieces is about four inches long, making this whistle the perfect pocket companion.
Overton Whistles made by Bernard Overton and Colin Goldie Along with Brian Howard, Bernard Overton has been credited in pioneering the development of the low whistles. His whistles came recognisable through the playing of Finbar Furey, and Davy Spillane in the original Riverdance.
He made a series of whistles for Celtic Southern Cross. All our Overton Whistles are now made by Colin Goldie who has developed a reputation for fine instruments every bit the equal to those previously produced by Bernard Overton. Each whistle purchased is signed and receives a Certificate of Authenticity from Colin Goldie and Celtic Southern Cross. We now stock tuneable whistles.
We now stock Sustao D (HIGH) whistles in two diameter bores. The S-Series is the most used size and should be the first purchase if you are in doubt which of size to buy. The V-Series have a smaller bore diameter and therefore a softer sound than the same pitched S-Series.

These high quality plastic whistles are individually voiced and tuned. The two piece units are tuneable. Each whistle has an adjustable thumb rest. The new A and Bb whistles have a wide bore. This gives a mellow tone and makes it easy to reach the bottom A note. The other Susato A whistles do not play the bottom couple of notes but they do move into the third octave easily.
The one piece models are lower in price but cannot be adjusted for pitch. The following two piece whistles come with vinyl carrying bag, snap-on thumb-rest and a fingering chart and Susato Joint Grease. They are D, C and all low two piece whistles.
Shaw Whistles
These whistles are hand made by Dave Shaw. They have a wooden mouth piece, tapered with minor back seam. They are noted for their small holes making them easy to play. These whistles require a lot of breathe but they have a rich airy sound great for airs.
